MMCV was founded in January 2024 and now has over 65 members.

• Open to all Michigan Medicine faculty, staff, students, residents, and postdocs

• Productive relationship with Medical School sustainability leadership and with Medical System leadership.

• Virtual meetings monthly with additional meetings when needed

 

MMCV Mission:

MMCV unites staff, trainees, and faculty who are deeply concerned about the impacts of climate change on our world and the health of its people, especially those in communities with disproportionate effects due to social and environmental inequities. We are dedicated to accelerating movement toward carbon neutrality within our health system, championing sustainable healthcare and research, advocating environmental justice, and fostering climate resilience. Our commitment extends to increasing education about climate change and inspiring actions that reach beyond Michigan Medicine to cultivate a healthier, more equitable future for all.

Michigan Medicine Sustainability Projects with MMCV involvement:

• Bicycling Task Force: 2 or more locked sheltered bicycle cages. More bike racks (sheltered where possible). Incentives for employees who need no or minimal use of vehicle parking spaces. Bicycle clinics.

• Food Task Force: Menu items to have labels based on their sustainability. Reduction of beef and other red meat. More locally sourced food. Better waste management. 

• Electricity Usage Task Force: Better air handling. Lights and computers shut off after hours. Reduced plug loads

  • Metered dose inhalers: Reduction or phaseout because of their carbon footprint

  • Energy-efficient design for new or renovated buildings
